Default Auto folding the outside mirrors.

Has anyone rewired the outside mirrors to automatically fold when the engine is turned off. I could use this feature.
Tks

Hi there-

Giving you a bump but i am going to guess that with 129 views and no replies you are the first to consider this?
Maybe put a reminder on your keychain to turn the mirrors closed before exiting the car?

Good luck

I had the same thought, but it's because I get annoyed that if you turn the **** to put them back in driving position before starting the car they won't move until you toggle the switch again.

I suppose the same happens with the sunroof.

I'd be curious if anyone has improved this feature also

I imagine that you'd need some kind of delayed relays system that would:

1) keep mirror system energized for some time after main accessory power is shut off when key is removed from ignition
2) would selectively do two things:
a) apply voltage automatically to some terminal that normally gets voltage when you command the mirrors to fold when power is shut off
b) apply voltage automatically to some terminal that normally gets voltage when you command the mirror to un-fold when power comes back on

Depending is the motor system for mirrors has any kind of power consumption at idle, it might be entirely possible to just wire it to always on power terminal and the process becomes much easier.

Now that we know what needs to be done, be our guest and pioneer/DIY the process

Do you mean to tell me that Allroad has mirrors that auto-fold? Or is it optional and only on some models (e.g. 4.2)?

My 2004 2.7T AR's mirror set switch has a fold position.
I wanted to add the option to make it automatically fold with engine on and off.

my 2001 has that too. Kind of nice albeit useless if you have to do it manually every time and I never use auto car washes (useless they are) which I believe this was specifically designed for?

My 2001 has it also. You just turn the window adjustment **** to face the back of the car and they pop in. In Europe where parking spaces can be crazy tight this would be useful. In the country I don't really need it, but it is cool.

I think the switch is 'dumb' because if you move it when the car is OFF and there's no power to the switch, then once you turn the key to ON the mirrors fail to act according to the switch. The switch also doesn't send continuous power to the motors.

There's a relay somewhere and all the switch does is bump it.
My guess is if you can hit that relay with a bump (from the door lock power maybe?) the should fold. Tie the unlocking wire to the other side of the switch (to unfold). The third consideration is to keep the relays powered if the car is OFF (airbag motor maybe?)

probably much better options but that's how I'd suspect it could work. I'm faaar from an EE though, so don't tear me a new one if I'm way off base here
