Default buzzy growl at start-up?

Okay, I've only had my ar for less than two weeks, but I've noticed in the morning that when I first start it up, the 2.7t has a buzzier sound than usual. It lasts for about 30 seconds, or until I've driven maybe a 1/4 of a mile, and then abruptly stops. There's no sign of anything wrong with how the car accelerates or performs otherwise, and I never hear it except after my ar has been sitting up. (I sometimes hear it when I get into the car after work.) It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, and the buzzy growl definitely correlates to engine revs. Is this normal? Something that spins up briefly then stops? Or do I need to have the car checked by the dealer? So far I've put about 1,400 miles on it, and have loved every single one!

Default That's normal, don't worry

All allroads do that, only happens when engine is cold. Related to heating up the catalytic converter to reduce cold engine emissions. I think that acceleration/performance feels reduced as well.

Thanks, Ollie. I was hoping it might be something like that. Otherwise, the car's been flawless, and now that I've passed the break-in period I've been able to toss the car around a bit more. So much fun!

Default I Wondered About That Also

Mine makes the buzzing sound as well, my A6 doesn't, but figured it was part of the normal warm-up procedure - nice to know the reason behind it.

Default Mine makes more of what I would call a "lifter" sound - sort of a fast "tick-tick-ticking" noise

It goes away after just a few seconds. Anyone else experience this?

Default Yep, mine too

Might as well get all the various noises heard at start-up sorted out. I hear this "lifter" noise at start-up also, very briefly though. It does sound like a valve train associated noise but could be the pneumatic suspension, as it too seems to be making minor adjustments at start-up. Probably all very normal, just so accustomed to the absence of an odd assortment of noises coming from the 2.8 in the old A6.

As you can see, I always try to score a parking spot as far away from the hoi polloi; trying to keep the allroad as door ding free as possible.

Default There is also the jerky shift from the first gear to the second in the tip.

This again happens only for a minute or two. The others must also be getting that too, right? ... Right?

I had the same concern until I found this previous posting:

The sound or sputtering is from the: Secondary air injection system (AIR) in short. The system uses an air pump to inject fresh air behind the exhaust valves for approximately 100 seconds during OUR cold start.

And after each subsequent engine start (up to 96C or 205F)the system will, switch in for 10 Sec during idle and is then monitored by itself, with a 20 sec delay.

What it's for?? Reduce exhaust emissions during engine warm-up and save our catalyst.

So, enjoy. And don't worry.. It's made that way.."
