Default Day 1-2 with APR Chip

Damn... I hate to give APR kudos..especially when they wouldn't RAINCHECK me on the xmass sale, because my chip wasn't made at that time. but.....

The chip is great...

For those of you who drive 4 barrel carb v8's in the 70's.... you can all relate.. Its the same feeling... you have power on tap all the time.. and just like your olds, pontiac, chevy or ford, when you floored it..after the downshift happened, you would feel the carb's secondaries open up...and whoosh!!! The car would fly like a bat out of hell.

The New APR chip for the S and R ECUed allroads does the same thing...in spades...and you don't have to floor it...it comes on earlier but still controlable.

Do I dare say RS6-AVANT.. a new creature is born... and its as TAME as a kitty and as powerfull as a lion.

DYNOBUTT....level road.. stock ECU in 6th...floor the ar and it takes me 3.5 secs to go from 70-80.... Then with the chip..the deed is done in 2.5

The low end GRUNT at 1500-2000 without Tubo boost is vastly improved...I can lug though ez pass (toll) in third and continue the exceleration with no further down shifting needed.

Now the good news.

I drove from East Meadow, NY to West Hartford CT...(my son was accepted to U of Harford...tour time) One tank round trip... highway speeds were varried from 55- 80- MPH, plus town 30 mph speeds. The trip up..sonny boy drove... (remeber 101 in a 55?) V1 on the dash. He kept the speed to 70 in a 65..OK! On the trip back I got to enjoy the car.. 80 MPH cames up even faster than ever, without flooring the car.

The trip computer showed 22.7 when I got home and filled up the next day. As usual the computer was off a bit and my math worked it at 20.5 MPG...

My normal commute to NJ gives me a computer of 20.5... I'll see what the week brings.

So far...I love the chip and the ability to switch to the stock program.

By thw way, APR technology...when the car is hooked to a VAG...the ECU reads the exact same id #'s as if it were the stock chip. The dealer can't tell the diff, unless they drive it, in chipped mode.. or the open the box. Which they don't unless they have a specific reason to..

If any of you 03-04 ar owners plan to chip..then you must do the oxy sensor recall first, because the recall reflashes your ecu, which can't be done with any other chip in place.. then you are blown..

By the way.. the surgeon at RAPID AUTO in Monsey NY was a girl named Chevy.... My Audi is powered by the work of a Chevy? ..go figure.

So.. what if inside the plastic ECU box I put a 50.00 bill in with a note.and it says...Go No Further?

click

Default So this was a chip, and not the DPP.

Your post got me thinking of two different things. First, when will DPP be available for the '03? Second, if this chip can deliver so much performance boost *AND* improve fuel economy, then why can't Audi provide at least better fuel economy with the same performance?

I have a Tip, and realize that this will suck some economy, but I am still befuddled as to why it is so bad.

Default What do you call bad?

FIrst off mine is a 6 speed and as a manual there is direct contact between the transmission and the engine...always locked. In any automatic its a fluid coupling that's why you can give it gas and the tach will increase but no real speed increase. At a given speed the trans and engine will lock up in 4th and 5th ususally..(watch your tach after the shift to 5th, you will see it drop again..(almost like a 6th speed)

So there is built in ineficiency in an automatic.. not to mention that the time the auto shift takes also eats up MPG..

GIAC makes a chip for the transmission alone. It does not increase engine performance, but it makes the shifts quicker... more agressive and help economy as a result. You will feel the shift with this chip...as opposed to stock.. and dealers don't care about this one..so I'm told.

As far as DPP... APR is the only company to have this technology. BUT...they don't have it for the 2.7T engines. They have been saying for years "we are working on it.." They still say that as recently as last week. But they are non commital as to when..let alone a timetable.

As to why Audi can't do this? Well they can, but just like our radios, they are tuned for the middle of the road. The take an average of all dirving conditions...NY to CA.. and the average driver for the ar and build it around that model.

Default Can you please expand on your comments about chipped cars and the recall...

I got your point in the post but...is the concern that you will be "found-out" or that the dealer will not be able to re-flash (or whatever they need to do) your ECU.

TIA

Default Simply put...

With an APR chip in your ecu, VAG-COM will see the chip as the Audi Chip, it will code the same as an Audi, however, if the chip needs to be reflashed for service reasons, such as a recall like the Oxy Sensor recall, then you are given away. If you car is in chipped mode, the service guy will feel it when he drives it, so switch back to stock mode via the cruise control feature.

The chip is encrypted by APR so it can't be de coded by the competition. This encryption usually prevents reflashing by a dealer. If the dealer can't re-flash.... they would pop the hood, open the ECU and TADA...warranty ussues..

It's my understanding that with cars that are able to be direct ported, such as the 1.8T cars, a dealer would be able to reflash the chip, in this case your APR program is over written and you can go back to your dealer for a reload.. sometimes free, sometimes 50 bucks...
One day the ar will have direct port..but now now, or so we have been told.

Perhaps a bit of preventative care should be done, such as a 50.00 bill inside your ECU plastic box..with a note: To the Audi Service Tech "You don't need to go any further.. this chip is fine."

Whadayathink?

I think $100 would be sure to keep your secret, not sure about $50 ;-)

Default I would expect $50 to do the trick in most cases.

A friend of mine in England used to "reprogram" the mileage of cars he's purchased at auction quite regularly. He cracked open the instrument cluster on one particular car and inside was a note that read "Oh no! Not again!"
