Default Help! ... Transmission oil screw up!

As you can guess, I am the next dumbass in line that opened the wrong plug for my first motor oil change on my used '01 Allroad. I have looked through my owners manual (not useful) and the old posts here to realize that I am in a bad place. I will have to end up buying a more detailed manual, but wanted to know if someone could start helping me out, and don't want to have to tow it to the dealer.
Oil type?
The filler tool... Can I get this locally? or someone have any idea on a homemade kit that I could try to make?
What size allen wrench do I need for the filler plug????
Also, I have the amount that came out... should I just try to replace that same amount for now (add a little more to account for the filter?
Or should I just try to replace the filter now too?

Please help, I will keep searching.....
thanks,
Mr. Badwrench

Default Oh man. Sorry to hear about that. I wish I could help with the trans situation, but

I assume you have an auto trans and I am a manual trans guy and have never had to tinker with it anyway. What I can help with is your oil change Take a look at the link below - it should be helpful for the oil change part of your fiasco.

Here is an image from the article showing the oil drain plug location:

Default Easy to correct...

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/39359/transmission_6.1.jpg"></center><p>
(1) capacity: 3.6 L (including oil cooler) Fill to 1 mm +- 1 mm below bottom lip of oil filler hole
(2) SAE 75W90 (synthetic only), e.g., Redline MT 90 or Amsoil
(3) You will need an inexpensive oil pump or suction device to fill the transmission (kragen, etc.)
(4) Ramps or jack stands helpful to give you crawl space
(5) Remove front and rear belly pans
(6) Two transmission drain plugs, you will need to open both to drain and replace oil. One on front transmission housing (see pict. section #3) and the 2nd on End Cover Housing (rear most section of tri-sectioned transmission, see pict. section #2).
(7) Oil Filler Plug -- I believe a 3/8" allen wrench fits

Default dont drive it for chrissakes

things are fvcked up enough as is... dont even start the car. If you have... BAD YOU... dont do that.

do you have a manual gearbox or an automatic ?

the fluid for the auto is most likely (confirm for good results) G-052-162-A2 and probably 9L of it... figure $250-$300 for a fill at dealer.

the fluid for manual may be (confirm for good results) g-005-000 or a later version of it. Figure $100-125 for the 4 quarts of manual fluid at dealer.

Price of the gearbox.... between $5 and 8K plus labor. A gearbox is not something you want to have a problem with.... extreme precaution is to be taken when working on any audi, if you're sloppy and careless you will end up paying for it... literally.

Default Re: Help! ... Transmission oil screw up!

Thanks guys for the info and pics... that will help thanks!

yeah, I forgot to add that it is an automatic. I knew from the color/feel of the oil coming out that is wasn't going to move for a while. Friend of mine gave me a number of an old VW/Audi mechanic... he is helping me source the correct oil (at his cost)and leading me in the right direction.

Well, this is one of those moments to burn into those memory cells...

Default do NOT get the wrong fluid.... Call a dealership up

get the parts dept ... give them your vin... ask what trans fluid you require.

DO NOT PUT THE WRONG FLUID IN THERE.

btw... there is a special filling technique required to fill up an audi automatic gearbox. it must be done at operating temp... might be covered in a manual of some sort.

Default Phil...just a question, but with a stick, why is Amsoil 75W-90 not okay. I use it and

between that and OW-30 in the crankcase, I avg 25mpg on the highway...hell, coming back from S. NY, I got 27!
