Default Who changes their own oil? Help!

I need to change my oil and filter before I beat up my car this weekend and I can't get an appointment anywhere. So how do I do it myself?

I found the directions for an A4 (see below). Are the steps for removing the plastic cover and removing the oil drain plug the same? It mentions that there are two plugs... are they labeled? How much do you tighten the drain plug when you put it back on?

Does anyone have any write-ups on this? From a service manual or something?

A4 oil change directions

Default The pan is aluminum, so don't crank it...

I get the plug snug then give it a little more (Sorry I don' t have any torque specs) The oil filter is where you need to be careful. When you take off the old one make sure the gasket comes w/ it. Now apply a small amount of oil, w/ a clean finger, to the new gasket on the filter. Make sure not to touch anything dirty to the oil filter when putting it back in place. Once the filter become snug, give it another half turn... after you add the new oil, run the engine for a bit to get the oil in the new filter. Then check the oil level and add if necessary. There is some instruction in a nutshell. Make sure to change your oil after a track event or very hard running...

Default sorry, the drain plug is on the OPPOSITE side (pass) from the fiter

the oil pan is horizontal from left to right

filter is on the left and drain plug is on the right

also there should be a drain plug washer, included with the Factory oil filter replacement

but that might have changed with the 2001's

Default Yes, I've always done my own oil changes on my other cars...

...but I've never owned an Audi before, so some steps are different from what I'm used to.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. If you can think of any other details for those steps that are specific to Audi please let me know.

I haven't climbed under the car yet. Hopefully the location of all of these parts will be very obvious when I go looking for them.

Default Great instructions - one minor addition

Step 7.5 - Make sure rubber gasket from old filter isn't stuck to engine block. Sometimes they stick, and if not careful, you'll end-up with two gaskets (old and new).

Default VERY IMPORTANT : Make sure car is on a level surface!

Otherwise you will put too little or too much.

When topping of, never ever add more than half Q. at the time, then check again.
