how often should the compressor come on?

Re: only when chaging levels or load is being rebalanced
nope. no sagging. and on the freeway i can not really hear if its on or not as my exhaust is a little loud. but in town i do hear it often....

this is normal....
as all the allroads age, the compressors are not as efficient as they were when new. So like older people, they have to breath a bit more often to keep everything working right.
If you search a bit you will find some tips for lubricating the compresor, cleaning its air intake and general care ideas.
But it sounds normal.

just a bit more info..
the fact that your ar rises in seconds has nothing to do with teh compressor. Most think the compressor pumps the air bags. However, the compressor simply feeds the air storage tank. The electronics then "vent" the storage tank to the given air spring(s).
When you hear your compressor going its because the volume of air or the needed pressure is not in the tank.
If there is spring leak.. the corner dips and the sensor clicks. This sends air from the tank to the spring. When the tank gets bellow a certin point, the compressor pumps the tank back to capacity.
When our systems have a problem.. it is a lot of searching and investigating as there are so many areas.

You are headed for a compressor replacemnet. Been there,
As the compressor ages it's pressure is less. It will not pressurize the system adequately and will shut of due to a thermal fault. After the thermal fault resets it will again begin to run attempting to pressurized the system. As the compressor deteriorates it will begin to leak oil into the regulator block. This oil will have an adverse effect on the regulator block requiring it's replacement. Eventually entire system will fail.
The compressor is cheaper than the regulator assembly. At a dealer the repair bill for me was aprox $1200 for both components.
