I'm afraid my search for a 4.2 allroad is over.
I though I'd had my search for a CPO 4.2 allroad narrowed down to three cars, none of which were closer than 700 miles from me. So all the contacts and negotiations were via email and phone. But none of them panned out- all three had been in accidents and had work done to them.
Looked like a nice Cobalt in NJ, but after 4 separate emails and a phone call asking if the car had been painted and being told in no uncertain terms that the car was "showroom" and never been painted, and them asking me for a credit card to hold the car for me to see, I finally got a 5th email that said there had been some paintwork done to the car. Nothing major, just the rear quarter panel and both doors (my sarcasm there, not theirs). Not touched up but completely resprayed. No thank you.
Looked at an '04 in Atlanta, but their site wouldn't allow me to pull a Carfax on that car. Could do it on other cars listed, but not that car. When I had the salesman fax it to me, it turns out it was involved in a front end accident. Oh, and even though it was listed on AoA's CPO site as a certified car, the car was not certified. But they'd be happy to certify it for $1900 extra. Pass.
Final '04 4.2 could have been nice but after three tries via email to get info on the car, all I ever got in response was "here's our number, give us a call." Kinda defeats the purpose of using the web, doesn't it? And the car ended up being wholesaled anyway and no longer available.
And no hitch has yet panned out either. And since towing is a requirement, I'm going the SUV route for now. Looked at one nice BMW X5 4.4 over the weekend and heading out at lunch to look at another. Seems to be a pretty good selection of CPO '04 & '05 V8s coming off lease and available for a reasonable price.
Not going to abandon Audi, but for now there's nothing that fits what I need. Would love a Q7 but buying a car wasn't in the budget for this year and a new one would be double the price of 2 or 3 yr old X5. Perhaps at some point I'll replace the 528 with an S4 or maybe even an A4 Cabriolet. But unless all the stars align with the perfect CPO 4.2 and a hitch, I'll no longer be able to be "allroad'Ed".
Stay tuned.

Oh, please don't ask about parts etc. I'm still holding out slim hope ....
that some miracle will happen and I can reuse all my parts. But if not, I'll let you all know.

Interesting. Are they an Audi dealer too???
With only 8 months of warranty left on it, I'd want a CPO car for good coverage. But not badly priced if it's a clean car. And I like burgundy too.
