Default Road trip report: Boston to Bar Harbor and back...

Vitals:
* Miles - 1023
* Average MPH - 36.8
* Average MPG - 21.2
* Top speed - 100+ (amazingly stable at high speeds)
* Off road excursions - 1 (you can drive to an outer island at low tide - very cool)
* Big surprise - Parktronic is a wonder for parallel parking, but missed a slightly off angle pole (but unfortunately I didn't - bumper cover scratched and cracked the rear lense. $640 in parts 8^C )

Review:
Acadia NP is a must see for anyone interested in hiking and seeing the Maine coast line. Picture craggy coast with crashing waves at high tide and amzingly alive tidal pools at low tide, and that is Acadia. Formed by an ancient volcano and carved by glaciers, Mt Desert Island is made from granite, has the highest coastal mountain (Cadillac 1500' first point-of-light in the US), and is the third largest island in the US. Anyone know the other two?

There is a 26 mile loop through the park that gives you a complete perspective of the island. Bar Harbor is the biggest town (also the most touristy), Southeast and Northwest Harbors are more rural.

Lobster is not a cheap as we thought it would be (1 1/2 lb-er dinners were $20, Lobster rolls were $12 pretty much everywhere). Whale watching was cool (literally and figuratively - had to be 45 degrees on the water 25 miles out while 90+ on shore), and when a 60' whale surfaces next to your 60' boat you get an idea of the size of these peaceful mammals.

The drive south down Rt.1 is beautiful. You ramble through towns, and pass non-stop antique shops. We stayed in Kennebunkport at a B&B and took in the whole scene there (big bucks in Kennebunkport). The Secret Service and military detail were doing dry runs with their Blackhawks and boats for the "W" visit to Ma and Pa Bush.

Great trip for the ar. Love the looks it gets from all the XC Volvo owners as we blast them by (not to mention all the SUVs on the road). The ar is amazingly comfortable for 4 adults and loaded with a weeks worth of luggage. Must say after 7 months with this car, we have no regrets (other then my stupidity in slicing into the poll).

Have a great week...

Default Whidbey Island WA

Whidbey Island in Washington state is either first or second. I've always heard second after Long Island, but recently heard "they" decided a part of Long Island didn't belong and so possibly Whidbey is first instead.
