Default SMOKE!!

2002 2.7T allroad.

150K Miles.

Changed oil a few days ago. On first trip over 10 miles (only two short trips after oil change), Wife drove car (30 miles each way) on return trip up mountain, she said "High pitched whine (not her) upon acceleration. Sound went away when accelerator released." She then noticed smoke billowing out of rear of car. (from tailpipe). Called me - put car on flatbed and delivered home.

I assume turbos (gasp) but I see postings about oil leaks etc. Just seems like it should be something related to the DIY oilchange I did.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Yup. Acc to a mechanic I spoke with earlier this year, whine and smoke from tailpipe could indicate failing Turbo seal. (Wine and smoke indicates romantic evening) If the impeller broke you would have obvious loss of power. But could also be piston blow-by. Did you accidentally drop your wedding ring into the crankcase?

Sounds like turbos to me, sorry.

I had the exact thing happen to me a year ago, turbos started whining about 50 miles prior to them blowing the seal completely which resulted in a curtain of smoke behind the car.

Sorry to say, definitely sounds like turbo death. Mine whined for about 200 miles before it stopped, both the whine and the turbo. Surprisingly the car still ran below 3000rpm once it died, just not well. Though mine wasn't dumping oil which is bad for the cats, so you did right.

If you are a DIY, pull the lower turbo hose on the intercoolers. A small amount of oil in there is normal, if there is a lot... gue$$ what.

only way to replace the turbos is to pull the engine, and that ain't cheap nor easy.
