Default Will a brake job break the bank?

It's time for new brakes and I did a search to find out the typical costs are, but came up without a sure target price. So what have you guys paid for brake jobs (not at dealers)? Thanks in advance.

Default It varries...

If you go OEM it can get pricey. Right now on Ebay are sets of Rotors F&R SLotted/Drilled for $259.00? Ad to this the cost of pads and labor. I'd check around on the State boards that apply to your area on Audi World. Ask around for a good shop.

Default 2001 2.7

86,000 miles on original brakes by the way. I'm the original owner. Long over due, but I think the six speed has saved brake wear.

Default Where are you? Probably some kind AW neighbor who can help with labor...

At 86K, best to anticipate replacing the rotors.

I got my Hawk pads front and rear for $225. Don't know about rotor costs, but shop around, including our AW spoonsors- like AWE and TireRack- for package deals on pads and rotors.

If you were in the Chicago area, I'd offer to have you spend a Saturday afternoon in my garage and get it done.

Default That's a very generous offer, but

I'm in Minnesota (left Chicago 30 years ago). I have a good relationship with a local shop which specializes in German cars. Nice guys to whom I don't mind paying a fair price.

Default You're in luck. I've got the same car and just priced it out for mine...prices inside...

Prices from ECS Tuning
Hawk HPS pads/front: $119.95
Hawk HPS pads/rear: $59.95
Front Zimmerman rotors: $149.95/pair (16.7mm offset)
Rear Zimmerman rotors: $89.95 (38.1mm offset)

See the ECS site about measuring your rotor offset. If you've got rotors with (22.7/front and 44.5mm/rear) rather than the same as mine, your rotor prices will a little higher.

If you've got the sport package, you probably have the same parts that I do, but you should check before you order.

And then there's labour. If I was paying someone else to do them, I'd expect to pay about 45/minutes per corner for the complete job. So that's 3 hours @ whatever labour rate your mechanic charges (or free if you're doing it). I'd also recommend you have the brake fluid flushed at the same time. That should really be done every 2 years. You can also order the brake fluid from ECS. You'll want Pentosin DOT4 fluid in the 1L can @ $9.49. That's enough to flush the system.

Cheers,
