Default Intermitent Engine Speed Sensor - HUGE PROBLEM. Please Help.

92 S4. Randomly cuts off... and the starts right up without a problem. It is impossible to drive because it does it sometimes when I'm trying to gain some speed... causing the car to jerk, as in push starting a vehicle. If i let it idle, it dies within 5 minutes... very clean, non violent cut off, just like turn key off.

That is it for the random part.

Now, it has a strong misfire (studder) if i try to floor it, @ about 1.7 bar and up...

It keeps throwing a "Intermittent Engine Speed Signal" code, and "Positive Ignition Circuit Open" code... .

So far I have replaced, but the problem still persists:

MAF
Both reference and engine speed sensors
TPS
Ignition switch
Checked the contact between engine speed sensor and ecu.

Manual says at this point I should replace the ECU, but I would like to see if you guys know anything before I throw $500 on a ECU that I might not need.

Also, is the Engine Speed Sensor a Function/Not function type of sensor, or can it actually go on and off randomly?

THANK YOU!!! Any imput appreciated!!!

I just rebuilt my turbo... and I can't enjoy it.

Default Bob Myers had issues like that that looked like the G28 speed sensor but turned out to be the

Cam Position Sensor. The ECU through CEL codes for the speed sensor but not once did it throw a Cam Position Sensor code. The car used to just die on him, no warning whatsoever, and then recover and carry on. Eventually he replaced his Cam sensor and all those problems went away.

That is the theory but in his case, not the practise. No codes either.

Unfortunatelly the new CPS did not solve my problem.
I guess changing the ECU is all that is left?
