Default OT: BMW crank position sensor question

This forum is always fast wheras the BMW forums are not so I thought i'd ask here.

My wifes 325 died while she was driving it. No spark from the coil. Fuel pump runs and injectors light up a test lamp. Coil tests ok per Bentley and has power to it. ECU is getting power at the connector and is sending a signal to the injectors, ISV, fuel pump etc. The crank position sensors wire looks to have been chafed by a drive belt and wire is exposed but it still tests ok per Bentley. But I assumed this had to be it. Ordered a new one from BavAuto and they sent me one that isn't OEM. I put it in and still no start. Bentley says the crank position sensor should read 540(+-54) ohms which the original did. The new one from BavAuto reads 860 ohms. Is this the problem or am I barking up the wrong tree and should be looking at the ECU? Something else? There are no fault codes but I unplugged the ECU before I checked.
