OT: buying a car back from insurance
A good friend just had a woman wipe out infront of his 2001 VW GTI VR6 and it was totalled. He was pretty fanatical about maintaining it and it was in great shape. Any idea how they figure a buyback price? I want to buy it and part it. Just looking up prices on the motor, tranny, ecu and seats look like they could be worth $3k or more. Any ideas?

i think it has more to do than just state guidelines. I'm pretty sure it has to do with their damage
estimate as well. A car can be just beyond the point of a total loss, but still have a lot of salvageable parts so they'll charge more.
