Thrown Rod
A couple weeks ago my '94 S4 with 190k broke down. All the signs pointed to a blown head gasket. I Had it looked at and was told it had thrown a rod and that the engine was done. I've never driven it very hard at all, and it seemed to happen while causally pulling away from a stop sign. This was all bad news, considering I just bought it last fall and it is in incredible condition. A well respected denver area mechanic had said it had tons of life left 
It is in great shape cosmetically, and the interior is perfect other than some drivers seat wear, so obviously I'd like to repair it, but am not sure how good of an idea that really is, economically.
I got got a quote on a used engine for $1600. How difficult is an engine swap for these cars? I've seen a seeming simple engine swap on a 2000 A4 be extremely complicated and expensive, so i'd rather not go through something like that.
This car has been great, I really hope I can get it going again.

Man, sorry to hear that. Hard to believe something like that could happen, especially given the lack of abuse.
No clue what that would cost, but someone will be along here shortly with some good advice for you. I imagine my shop would charge me well over a grand in labor to do do an engine swap.

Contact Brian Weldon in the Boulder/Denver area. wheresweldo at yahoo dot com. He does a lot of UrS car parting so he should know where the parts are if he doesn't have it. There are lots of owners in the Denver area for advice as well.
There is plenty of room in the engine bay, so the swap is pretty straightforward.
