In my talks with "Jared" if that is his real name, he told me the smoke smelled sweet.
This would mean it was burning coolant. If you are not doing the work yourself, ask to see the motor yourself when he (mechanic) takes the head off.

FWIW, and as little as I trust him, he told me was on stage 1+ software.
Like I said, I strongly doubt he put a hold in a piston head. The ECU would detect knock and he'd never be able to make enough boost.
