Default Melted plastic on body panels? What the...

Hey all,

A few weeks after bringing home the '01 A6 2.7t (silver), I noticed on the bottom panel, driver's side, under the door, that there were a couple little marks.

I didn't know before this that the panels (and apparently the doors) are plastic. Anyway, these little marks are very strange. They almost look like a tiny little sliver of plastic from the panel was carved out, then laid back down nearby and melted back onto the plastic.

There were a couple marks that looked similar, but came off with a fingernail nudging. These others are more persistant, and for the life of me I can't figure out if they're actually what I'm describing or something just stuck really good.

Anybody else seen anything like this? If that's what it is, is there a way to fix it? If it's something else...who knows what...maybe cement dust that got on and solidified or something like that...how should I get it off?

Thanks a million...

Lou

It is the glue that they use to set the small lane markers. It is an expoxy and some will not come off as the solvent in the glue has literally burned into the clear coat.

Long process, and never 100% effective.

Needs to be soaked with a safety solvent for an hour, then using a "plastic" razor blade carefully remove that which will come off easy.

The concern is that the expoxy has a really hot solvent system that "melts" the solids into the clear. If not careful you can remove clear down to the e-coat.

After getting off all you can, then polish and rewax.
