Rear Brake pads

Rear Brake pads
I took my A6 4.2 in for the yearly check up. They told me I needed pads for the rear and nothing else. I told them I would do it myself. The Service manager called back 10 minutes later and told me you needed a special tool because of the electronic brake. He stated you would be unable to perform this in your garage without the tool. Any one know anything about this. I hand no problems with my 03 A6. Thanks for the help in advance.

i had no problem. You do need a took to screw the pistons back in $25 from harbor freight in a kit. What year? If you have a C6 you may have an electric e-brake. Then you need something to release it. I dont know.
Incidentally, no one ever comes to this forum - i even hit it by error!

What they're talking about is the electric parking brake feature - it must be retracted to make room for the new pads. Depending on the model of your car the rent-a-tool may not fit into the face of the brake piston correctly - that's the case on my '09 S5 for example. The easier and more elegant approach is to use the Ross-Tech Vag-Com or the MacTools EPB101 to retract the electric parking brake. More info here:
