Default Cabrio in Canada? What are winters like?

What's it like going through a winter with a ragtop?

I'm thinking an S4 cab or CLK63 cab might deal with the mid life crisis nicely.

Default No comparison to the S4 or CLK, but my sister had a VW Cab and now has a Mini Cooper Cab...

They are absolutely fine in the winter. No more colder than any other car after a cold night and warm up like any pther car.

Just to note, they are both soft tops, not sure if hard tops differ (if you are even considering a hardtop cab).

I'd love a hard top convertible, but none of them seem to offer a large enough back seat.

Default S4 cab (sales pitch)...

Aerodynamics

The Audi S4 Cabriolet is a vehicle whose temperament and unique qualities are obvious at first glance: the flat front end, the subtle wedge shape and the powerfully contoured tail with visible tailpipes are clear indications of the sporting prowess that it has inherited from its designers.

The Cabriolet has a design characterized by a scrupulously economical approach--no swage lines or edges interfere with the dominant flat, taut surfaces and expansive arches. The result is an unaccustomed harmony of opposites: tranquility and forward urge, geometric precision and palpable emotion.

Antenna System

The S4 Cabriolet features a concealed antenna system under the composite trunk lid that includes telephone and four-channel FM, one-channel AM and remote control antennas. When the optional navigation system is ordered, the global positioning (GPS) antenna is included. This concealed location puts it out of harm's way, whether that is car wash damage, vandals or the simple wear-and-tear that can shorten the life of a telescoping mast antenna.

Design

With its powerful proportions and the unique, overtly dynamic shape of the front and tail ends, the S4 Cabriolet retains an extremely individual aura. The wide arch of the roof's outline, without any visible ridges created by the linkage, accentuates the body's flat proportions and the subtle wedge shape of the unit as a whole. From the front, the Cabriolet looks sporty and the back is sleek and sophisticated. Its flowing wedge profile is elegant and spirited, and is unspoiled by antennas, which are integrated into the trunk lid.

Power Top

The S4 Cabriolet features a power top that opens entirely automatically at the push of a button in barely half a minute. Pressing and holding the button for 24 seconds unlocks the top from the windshield frame and lifts it up to fold away or unfold and closes. The car must be stopped or barely moving to enable this feature. The top is specifically designed with a pad between the top material and the inside liner to isolate and reduce noise coming from outside and to insulate against temperature change. The hood's linkage is barely visible when the hood is in the raised position. The tautness of the hood, horizontal ribs and the cushioning assure there is no "bubbling effect."

Emergency locking of the top is accomplished using a special T-wrench located in the fuse panel area. This wrench locks/unlocks the top storage lid and locks the roof to the windshield frame.

With its heated glass window, triple-layer structure and accurate fit, the Cabriolet hood is also perfectly equipped for adverse weather conditions, winter-weather use and exterior noise. The electrically heated rear window glass is bonded through a special process to the top material and cannot be replaced separately.

The position of the top determines the trunk capacity of the Cabriolet. With the top up, the cargo capacity is 10.2 cu. ft.; with the top down, it is 8.9 cu. ft. A moveable panel in the trunk allows a larger trunk space when the top is up. The panel is easily moved with a lever in the trunk.

SAFETY

Impact Protection

The lower rigidity that is inevitable on a convertible compared with vehicles with a permanent roof could be compensated for on the Audi A4 Cabriolet by an optimized body shell structure. In addition, a rigid bolted-on subframe at the front, with additional diagonal struts at the front and rear, reinforces the body.

The A-pillar, which plays a particularly vital part in a rollover, is reinforced ultra-efficiently. High-strength reinforcing tubes and the generally optimized design of the posts assure the desired properties.

Sills with an optimized thickness and cross-section boost the occupants cell's rigidity and optimize occupant protection. High-strength tubes are also used in the seat cross-member, as a means of enhancing occupant safety in the event of a lateral collision.

Rollover Protection

An active rollover protection system provides additional safety if the car overturns. In this case, two protective bars are triggered behind the rear passengers within milliseconds. The two active rear rollbars are mechanical units that use electric solenoids to release the bars to spring upward when a rollover has been detected by a new sensor located in the airbag control. Together with the extremely rigid windscreen frame, they help to preserve the survival space both for the front and rear passengers if the car rolls over.

Side-intrusion Beams

Side-intrusion beams in side doors help ensure equal distribution of forces in case of side-impact. In the S4 Cabriolet, the doors perform a very special safety function. Their mere dimensions highlight the differences compared with the smaller doors on the four-door A4 Sedan and Avant models. Side-impact beams and energy-absorbing material in the door panels aid in resisting intrusion and absorbing energy in a crash. In conjunction with the structural reinforcements in the sill and in the side section beneath the rear seats, the special impact members in the doors have a particular safety function.

SUSPENSION

Front Suspension

The S4 Cabriolet has a revolutionary four-link front suspension featuring virtual steering axis, which creates excellent steering response. Select aluminum components, such as all aluminum front uprights, reduce unsprung weight and enhance handling.

Rear Suspension

The S4 Cabriolet has a trapezoidal-link rear suspension that enables precise tracking and permits increased fuel capacities, as well as wider cargo space.

Sport Suspension

The S4 Cabriolet has a standard S-model sport suspension that increases the diameter of the front and rear stabilizer bars, including shocks that are modified for 30 percent greater stiffness and firmer springs, which provide a 30 mm lower ride height. Overall, this package provides excellent driving dynamics for more demanding, sport-oriented drivers.
