Fuel Economy

Fuel Economy
For anyone who has asked about fuel economy, here's mine since I've owned the car.
Averages worked out to 12.8 L/100 km or 19.3 mpg. Average fuel price (mainly Edmonton 91 Octane) was 84.8 (the spike in September 04 was Vancouver ...). Total fuel cost for 14 months and 20,518 km was $2,114.
I've always felt my fuel economy has been low, especially since I had oil run through my exhaust system in January 04. The dealership replaced the cat under warranty but it obviously must of messed up other things. I've had new spark plugs put in, I have a almost new MAF on the way, a Vag Com on the way and the oxygen sensor (probably should of done it right away) is next on the list if things don't improve ...
I just can't get over that my 1.8L 4 cylinder has worse fuel economy than our 3.1L 6 cylinder (Grand Prix).

4.2 fuel consumption
Just checked mine, 11.2 L/100K over the past 3500 km, mixed 50% city 50% hwy. And no, I do not baby it. Regularly shows 7.5L/100 at 120Km/hr on the flat.Better than my wife's 3.0 haha

I have a short trip to work (3KM) and I averaged about 16-17l/100KM
in my 01 S4 (2.7TT). The 4.2 V8 is about the same. Skapan must be driving the highway to work, and getting passed by old lady's on their walkers to get that kind of gas milage.
If you are all concerned with the gas milage that you are getting in your Audi's sell them and buy a VW TDI.

By my calculations, 12.8L/100 km = 18.38 mpg (US) or 22.07 mpg (UK)...
not sure how you got 19.3 mpg. Either way, it seems a little high, but it totally depends on your driving style.
During my ownership of my ex-'01 1.8t (quattro 5-sp), my mileage ranged from 20.xx to over 26 on occasions mpg (US gal). But I mostly got between 22-25, that's with approx. 60/40 busy hwy/city, where I generally don't go WOT or dip into boost too often due to traffic. If you want bad mileage, during the driving school 2 summers ago, I got ~10 mpg!! ;-)
A buddy of mine (basically the same car) has always had worst mileage than me, but I know that he drive his car harder than me, and his numbers seem to be close to yours.
For comparison, I'm now getting 17-20 mpg (US gal) in my S4. I do closer to 20/80 hwy/city driving these days, and I really can't use boost much due to traffic. And I know that it would get much worse if I drive harder, I've tried! ;-)
So overall I don't think your numbers are that bad, perhaps you just need to lighten you right foot a little ;-)
Btw, all my numbers are calculated from actual fuel consumed (from fuel receipt) vs. distance travelled. I find the trip computer isn't that accurate at all, expecially in the S4 when I used to consistently get 10% better what I actually got.

Good points
I don't know what happened with the calc - it works out line by line, but not the average ... for another day.
All numbers are from gas receipts with odometer readings - started writing the reading each time on the receipts when my wife had keep track of expenses for tax purposes - for the 15 extra seconds it takes to do, and the 15 minutes every few months to enter it is a great thing to do. My neighbor sits in has car and has a little calculator in the car to note the mileage each fuel up ...
In terms of the right foot - yes I have one, and no it's not likely to lighten up a lot. For some reason I drive more WOT with the snow on the ground. I guess I just like seeing cars half a block behind me one block past a light.
