Opinions wanted...
I'm having my timing belt done in the next week or two.
Question: If you had a choice between having the service performed by the dealer or by an independent...how much of a cost savings would there need to be for you to choose the independent?

Re: Opinions wanted...
if the independant is an audi/vw guy, then i'd go with them. regardless of the size of the savings, there will be a savings no matter what. and timing belt is a pretty straight forward job for a mechanic.

The question was... What if the difference was only $400 or $300 or $200 or $100 or $50??
At what point would you see the value in going to the dealer?
Perhaps for some people the dealer would have to be cheaper.

Not just a question of Money,But there are other factors !! such as...
Is there still a warranty on the car? will independant garage furnish a car loaner?,Do you trust your Audi Dealer? Different hourly wages?,its a question of reaching a certain comfort level

Exactly! And thus the question. What is your "comfort" worth to you?
No warranty. No loaner (no matter which you choose). Yes, I trust the Audi Dealer. Indep. comes recommended.
I honestly didn't think the question was this difficult.
Maybe worded this way...
What premium (if any) would wou be willing to pay for the piece of mind of having your car repaired by the dealer vs. an independent shop?
Given the following assumptions:
1) neither the dealer nor the independent will give you a loaner.
2) you have had good reliable fair service from the dealer in the past
3) the car has no warranty.
4) the independent comes recommended by people you trust.
Hopefully that is clear.
