so I tried out some Toulene this weekend...
First place I tried wouldn't sell it to me .. sighted a -new- Canadian law that took effect Jan 1 prohibiting them from doing so(?). Their policy is NOT to sell to the general public - you have to set up a business account (apparently the stuff's used to make drugs). Anyway... I went elsewhere and picked up a couple gallons for $30.
I ended up pouring the toulene into a jerry can and stopped up at a Husky (thinking they carried 94 octane - NOT - ... ended up using 92). I calculated the new octane rating to be 95.
95 =((13.6*92)+(2*114)) / 15.6
Calculation found by stfa on 'Toulene calculation'...
Q: How much toluene should I use per tank of gas?
A: Octane ratings can be very easily calculated by simple averaging. For example, the tank of an Audi A4 1.8TQ is 15.6 gallons. Filling it with 14.6 gallons of 92 octane and 1 gallon of toluene (114 octane) will yield a fuel mix of:
(14.6 * 92) + (1 * 114) / 15.6 = 93.4
The Audi A4 1.8T is a good example of a car that has very high octane needs if it has been modified to produce more turbo boost. The base compression ratio of this car is a very high 9.5:1 and when an additional 1 bar (14.7 psi) of turbo boost is applied on top of it, the resulting effective compression ratio is way beyond what 92 or 93 octane fuel can ever hope to cope with. Most modified 1.8Ts running without octane enhancement are running with severely retarded ignition timing and boost.
So.. the result? The buttmeter approved - but $30 ain't worth it! Would I do it again? Sure - but I'd start with 94 octane and put 3 gallons in (yielding 98 octane).

Calgary...
...are you a 2+? I should be a 3(-) by next week (if my inlets ever get here). I'm soooo looking forward to not hearing the 'siren' sound - oh and hopefully another 40hp/40tq!

Toluene is toxic so don't get it on your skin or breathe
the fumes.
9.5 cr isn't high these days. With modern engine mapping the cr isn't a big obstacle.
Boost pressure, mixture and timing all affect the detonation limit, especially timing.
Ethanol is the cheapest octanebooster but too much can cause problems with your fuelling, unlike toluene which is a beefy molecule.
At least ethanol isn't toxic to your skin or your lungs....

The 94 is probably heavily laced with ethanol so you'd be right
to begin with 91, or even 87 if high octane numbers are your aim. At some point the ECU will object I should think and throw a cel.

Last time I checked 5 gallons of toluene was $55. Didn't know that
they are restricting sales now.
Here in Vancouver, you can get race fuel (VP) at Mission raceway, I suspect it would be the same at Race City Speedway in Calgary.
