Cook will get their money either way. I live in DuPage, bought in Cook, paid Cook tax.

For every other county, it's where the car is registered, but Cook charges Cook tax even if you live in another county.

I don't think that is entirely true.

I live in DuPage and bought in Cook and paid DuPage tax rate plus half a point for Cook. It was explained to me two or three times and I still don't understand it.

I think out-of-staters are exempt from that rule

We bought our Jetta in Cook County IL and paid Indiana sales tax (6%).

Yea, same here. I even called Springfield to confirm....

Must be Cook's version of a commuter tax, but what a great way to convince people to go to other counties to buy a car.

If you are at a dealer, the Finance mgr has tax paperwork for each nearby county. And...

if it's a private sale just ask the person at the currency exchange for the appropriate tax form.
