if I, a cook county resident, buy a new car in lake county, what do I pay in sales tax?

With used cars it's not county-dependent. Is it different for new cars?

7%? 6.25% state + 0.75% for cook county

Let's see... I just spent 15 minutes looking that up. That'll be $50, please.

Note: that's assuming you purchased from a dealer. If you purchased from a private party, the tax varies with vehicle age and purchase price.

Actually I think it's 8.25% for a Chicago address and bought in Cook cty.

And 7.75% if bought in Lake and registered in Chicago.
