I've been puzzled as to why certain searches I've tried don't work, but I think I may have stumbled across why, from running across a thread here.
Apparently, you have certain words indexed, and searches on words that aren't indexed just don't work. Of course, on a database this large, with this many hits, you need to do this. A "find" feature, like word processors have, would just tie up the computers and we'd all be wondering how come nothing works.
Anyway, perhaps it would help to avoid confusion if you'd put, on the search page, a statement to the effect that "If your search doesn't work, it's because the terms you're searching on aren't in our index. Try another word or string." Even if the advanced search (when implemented) will fix this, having this disclaimer on the simple search page would be helpful, I think.

I suspect you're running into a bug
Where certain words that are supposed to be indexed, are getting indexed for a while and then the database gets corrupted and it doesn't think it's indexed anymore.
I'm working on trying to solve this problem since a couple of people have stumbled on it already.
There are also situations where some words won't get indexed, but it usually tells you in those situations.
