Hand tight, then 1/4 turn with wrench is always what I do.

I have never heard of using a wrench on tightening a oil filter -ever

Default I would have to see some official confirmation before I would endorse it.
Truth is I have seen just the opposite - but if this application requires it by the mfr - then go for it.

Default I use a wrench only because the my hands get oily making it hard to turn by hand
All I do is snug it on there, it's not tight at all.

Default The problem with a wrench is that it is too easy to apply too much torque.
