85 GT Coupe
Hi Guys, Normally over at the A6-C5&C6 Forum. About to inherit a 85 GT with the head gasket blown between 4-5 and the exhaust manifold cracked. I hate to put it back together without making a few changes. Dont really know much about the 5 cyl. Head upgrade? Exhaust? Where am I going to get the most bang for the buck. This is going to be just a fun little daily driver. Thanks Dan

Replace the headgasket

Have the head checked for flatness too. If it was severly overheated the head may be warped. Between 4&5 is where most of them go. You will see the amount of material supporting the gasket in that area is minimal. Use a good head gasket sealer and follow the torque procedure exactly. Oh and new head bolts too.
There isn't too much around for that motor in terms of performance. If you can find one there is a 272 cam that will add a bit of kick to it. It isn't going to make it into a monster though. I have one in my 87.5 and it makes it just a bit more perky.
I would consider changing to SS brake lines though. Personally I think the brakes need help.
A decent opened up exhaust will add a touch too.
You'd also be amazed at how much a good vacuum leak fix-up and tune-up will help. A fresh set of injectors if it's got high mileage might be something to think about too.
