stalling out in gear, but idles great
hey all--I just bought my first Audi---it is a 1989 90---I love the car, it is in good shape for the age--the car sat for a while, but the tank has been drained, new fuel pump (which whines LOUD constantly), new fuel filter, new cap, rotor button, wires, and plugs. I have been driving for a week now, and started out sluggish but after PREMIUM gas and fuel injector cleaner, was running AWESOME. Yesterday it started stalling out when put in drive, but when idling, I can give it as much gas as I want--even revved it up to 5000 RPM and no stall. any advice?

Re: IMHO, new fuel pump should not be whining. What RPM does it idle at?
I didn't think it should whine lik eit does, I have been told that they are noisy though. It idles @ 1000---what is the IMHO--sorry notice screen name "FIRST AUDI"
Thanks

Re: Try removing the air intake boot............
thanks but please help verify where air intake boot is---is it the round looking boot on the front left by the injector block, with the screen like filter and a big plunger when boot removed? please forgive my ignorance, but remeber first AUDI
Thanks again
Thanks again

Re: IMHO- in my honest opinion
warm idle spec for my 1990 100 is 600 RPM. in addition to the plunger sticking, check your throttle position sensor and be sure that it clicks when the throttle is released. if not make suer the TPS bolts are snugged down. if your 90 is like my 100, the throttle linkage is mostly mechanical with an amazing number of bushings that dry out and could cause your throttle to be all outta whack. the actual throttle cable on my 100 is about, ehhh 10 inches long, with the rest made up of solid linkage. Anyway, the additional load put on the motor from spinning the torque converter mixed with a misadjusted TPS can starve the engine of fuel and itll stall. Does it do it in reverse as well?. also check air intake parts such as air filter and check to make sure that your throttle plate is free moving and seats properly. carbon build up and assorted schmagma can clog up idle air ports and restrict air flow. try some Seafoam (available at your local Advance Auto Parts retailer, can you guess where i work?) and that will wrl in conjunction with the fuel system cleaners. any quesions feel free to ask, im mostly in the 100/200/5000/v8 forum, so you can find me there. =P
