well can anyone help me out. i think tom told me it could be my O2 sensor but just wanted to make sure before i go out and buy one and replace it.

clear it, drive, and see if it comes back. If the same one comes back, drive on it for a week or so, and see if any others come with it.

is this hard to change and also does it cost an arm and a leg to change?

If you're asking, then it's a pain in the butt, and will take you at least 1/2 the day. All weekend if you don't have the right tools.

Competent shop should charge you no more than 2 hours IMO, but they (the job) can get difficult...
