although i think id take a B5 S4 over E46, E36 or B6

really depends what you want out of a car...
I really like the M3 and consider its performance envelope to be slightly greater than the S4s. If I had to only have one car, i'd probably spring for the M3. However, the S4 does 98% of what the M3 does and if you're not just about straightline speed it'd be tough to find much discernable difference in performance. Due to the forgiving nature of the S4 I think most people would be quicker in it than the M3 on twisty roads too. In my current situation, i'd get the S4 over the M3 because I have other options for all out sports car type fun. either way you can't go wrong. It really does depend on what you want out of a car.
