MD speed cameras -- need to vent
I know this was discussed before, but just have to vent. We've received 2 so far, expecting more since there's a 3-4 week lag in mailing. Can we please all just agree that anyone who mentions the word safety is a moron or a liar ? This is one of the biggest sudden tax increases in modern history. Drive exactly the way you have done for your whole life, no accidents, no problems, except now the cost is roughly $2,000 year extra. 40 in a 30 zone isn't speeding. 90 on the beltway is speeding. And if you disagree, then don't complain when you're stuck behind me going 28 in a 30 zone (after all, 30 is the limit).
And so, I have done what Montgomery County wants. I now set my cruise at 2 mph below the speed limit just to be certain. The other day a frustrated mother in a minivan tried to bypass my A4 turbo on a single road and couldn't. Not being a wise ***, guess I'm just adding 5-8 min (and more pollution from idling at lights) to my commute for a "tax break".

that was me in the minivan.
just kidding.
i know how you feel. i am tired of seeing pics of my car coming in the mail too.
however, you have slowed down, and that is the purpose of the cameras.

I understand you're p*ssed, but...
The cameras only fire at, what, 8+ over? That info should be published somewhere. don't drive yours and others blood pressure up by driving at or under the limit.
Just pretend there's ALWAYS a cop shooting radar at that/those locations...you know about it, so check your speed. Besides, the MSP Troopers I know all say '8 over, I might let you off, but 10+ and you're getting a ticket'.
I had a run-in with a red light camera awhile back. I ran the light, and am not going to dispute that. I paid the $75 after confirming that the citation is essentially a parking ticket and that my record would not show it as a moving violation. Live and learn.
PS - SkyNet will soon become self aware. :P

So we all have to agree with you, or accept moron/liar status, and be stuck behind you?
Probably not the best way to garner support for your position.
I think speeding cameras suck. Unlike redlight cameras (which deter and penalize a dangerous action), moderate speeding is rarely a safety issue.
That said, I haven't had a moving violation in more that 15 years, so it doesn't seem to affect my life.

Actually, the cameras are supposed to have 10mph leeway. And their sight is limited...
There's two spots on my commute, and I'm usually doing 60-70, slow to about 35-40 (speed limit is 35), drive about 50 yds from the camera, and then resume 60-70.
Also note that most of the time, cameras are placed in front of schools... I usually go slower around the area if I know there's a school nearby.
And the 10mph leeway is written on the back of the tickets they mail you, isn't it? Somewhere around the section where it explains how the cameras work?
