Default since we are on the subject of Red lights and accidents, my $0.02...

I dont think the red light cameras are the solution to reducing the number of accidents all together. while they reportedly reduced the number of broad side accidents they also increased the number of rear-end accidents.

IMO the best and simplest solutions could be light timing. I think if they increased the amount of time from when one light turns red til the other directions light turns green this would help in a big way. i have seen some lights that change the exact same time as eachother, leaving no room for error if someone were to run the red light. This would also be a very cost effective solution to the problem of causeing accidents.

while i do not support the running of red lights i do think that it will happen regardless of cameras or other penalties. this way it would give more time for those running red lights to clear the intersection before others entered the intersection and also provide enough stopping time and hopefully keep rear-end collisions down as well.

just my $0.02

Safety is not the driving force behind these things, that's my $0.02.

It's sort of a tax on people who run red lights. At least it's not addictive like smoking.

Add to it that often they shorten the gap from yellow to red, and the reason becomes clear.

You're joking right? DC red light cameras brought in $2,000,000 last month alone.
