Recommendations for places to stay in Indianapolis?
Going to the USGP in June, anybody from Indianapolis have a recommendation for somewhere to stay? Never been there, maps and web are giving me some good ideas but thought I'd ask for local help. How hard is it to drive to the speedway from across town?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Good Luck...Everything is about sold out in the city.
We go every year. Indy isn't very big so the drive to the track is pretty easy if you leave in the morning by 9am. You are probably going to have to stay out in the burbs at this point. Most hotels have a 3 night minimum and anything downtown is over $300/night.
Good Luck.

Book a reservation near the airport...
as you mentioned, those are pretty easy to get this far in advance. Consider that your safety.
If you're interested in saving money, use priceline.com about 3 days before the event. This is around the time when hotels will begin releasing inventory to priceline. You'll probably find something in the same area (2.5-3 star hotel) for about $40 a night (normally they would be $200/night during F1 weekend).
Indy has far more hotel space than F1 can use, however that doesn't prevent hotel owners from jacking up their weekend rates when F1 weekend rolls around. What invariably happens is that they will release their unsold inventory a few days before the event so they can fill the hotels. That's where priceline comes in.

Re: Book a reservation near the airport...
you might even try searching for "Plainfield", its a little town west of Indy, and there are lots of hotels at that exit, its also SO close to the airport......

If you can't find stuff West or by the Airport, you can always go East...
Just a 15 minute ride on I70 across the town from the track. It's not like driving from the north side to south side of Chicago.
