O2 sensor
I have a 1988 Audi 90 5 cyl. Can someone tell me how many O2 sensors there are to replace? I went to the dealer to purchase (charged me $166.00) and thought there might be two needed but he said i only needed one. He said there was only one on that car. Could someone confirm this? Also discovered when hitting reset button on console that it displayed a "52" code. Does anyone know what this means? I've been getting a constant "Check Engine" light, intermittent pinging, hesitation on hot days. Failed the state emission test for high HCs and brought it to a mechanic who just scratched his head. Now another mechanic wants to charge me for more diagnostics. I've been told its probably O2 sensor so went to purchase. Any thoughts? I just don't want to throw good money after bad.

not sure, but another O2 sensor question
I have to replace both of mine. And I would rather do it myself and save around $250 or so that I would have to going to a shop.
Is this a hard task to do? I have basic mechanic skills, can handle tools well, etc, but don't have a whole lot of experiance.
I have instructions and everything, just wondering if someone could give me a experienced opinion

Why don't you post the instuctions. I have pictures of the 02 sensors.
It should be a snap. I don't know if it would be better to go after the sensors from the bottom or top. You know how to jack up your car and set it on jack stands? Done it yet?

It's easy....
...get a breaker bar a 12" extension and a 22mm deepwell socket (or O2 socket). If you're using the deepwell then cut the wire at the top of the sensor, place the 22mm socket on and apply pressure (work from above).
Same deal for drivers side except a u-joint is also needed. If they're not stuck you should be able to do it in 1 - 1 1/2 hrs (taking your time).

As miktip said your car (5-cyl) only has one O2 sensor.
As for your code "52".....The 5 means you have a 5-cylinder. The 2 means you are in the US (at least your car was programmed for the US).
