Thermostat Location.
Is the thermostat on an 865kQ located at the end of the upper rad hose right where the multi-function temperature sender meets the engine block? Or is it located elsewhere. So far I have received two thermostats which look way too large for that opening. Supposedly they were the OE replacement so maybe I'm looking in the wrong area.

Huh? I got a 92 degree thermostat with un-matching gasket. Chuck makes it sound so easy to install but there's not a whole lot of hand room in there to get a ratchet and socket.
So are you saying I need to get a new switch too?

An ubiquitous mod is the 87 degree thermostat and matching fan switch.
You don't have to swap the switch if you stay with the hot thermostat. Last thermostat I got from Blau had the wrong gasket. RTV is an amazing thing, still holding 18 months later.
The tool for this is a 1/4" drive wobble socket and long extension. Actually, that's my favorite tool for most reapairs on this car

HeHe! Is there anything on an Audi that gives room to work?
I don't recall having too much trouble getting to the thermostat. Perhaps the turbo's are tighter in that area. The only problem I had was prying the old thermo out of there, as it had pretty much become part of the housing. I can't remember what size the bolts are, but I have a metric socket set with smaller sockets and it has a small ratchet. I may have used that. When you've mastered the thermo, try replacing the belts next, as a good progression in working on your Audi! :-)<p>Charles
