Default Aussi V8 Support race at Shanghai report!

Once again Michael Ting Chi-Hwa has proved to have the speed to be in the top, but not the kiss from lady luck in front on the massive Shanghai crowed during the Australian V8 support race at Shanghai circuit.

HUGE CROWD THERE!!!

The Asia Racing Team rookie out paced all of the Championship veterans to top the time sheets in Friday's dry session 1.5 sec clear of Michael Choi of DTM. Michael and ART rookie Zhang Jin proceeded to demoralize the oppositions by lapping 1.3sec faster then David Louie of DTM in 3rd under biblical rain condition using backup tires, which are supposed to be, seconds slower then the official Kumho rains.

Due to live TV scheduling Saturday's qualifying session were shortened to 20min from 30min right before the out lap. Michael did not disappoint during qualifying by topping the time chart for all of the session. Securing Pole position 0.5 sec ahead of DTM's Louie to line up 1st for Saturday afternoons race one. "I pushed right off the bat from the out lap onwards to set up a good rhythm for the 8th lap which is when the tires are at their best. I saw my number on top of standings on the score tower into turn 11 by mid session, and I knew I had the Pole position comfortable in hand. But I decided to keep pushing to evaluate the balance of the car and tires in race condition and managed to up the bar for the pole on the last lap," said Ting.

However Saturday's afternoon's race were not so easy for the Shanghai resident. "Michelle" as the team calls him seems to have failed to shake off the stream of bad luck following the forced withdraw from the last event in Zhuhai due to high fever. Ting made a clean get away which looked to set a dominating lead into Shanghai circuit's unique turn 1-2-3 complex. However at the top of the turn 1 hill an over-optimistically braking Louie of DTM tipped Ting into a spin to the grass. "I can feel my right rear lift up a meter into the air and after that you are pretty much a passenger." Luckily Michael's car managed to avoid the gravel trap and rejoin the race from last position. However the contact had left a small crack in the rear wheel, which made the car unstable and left Ting spinning the same spot one lap later. "I really thought my race ended when I spun the 1st time after David hit me," said Ting. "When I realized I could go on, I push 110% for the next few corners and unfortunately the car didn't like it."

With the retirement of Saturday, Michael faced an uphill battle on Sunday's race 2 as the grid position is to be determined by the result of race 1. "Its quite discouraging for a driver to have to start 13th when you worked so hard all week to put yourself on the pole, but I suppose the crowd for sure will be getting their tickets worth," said Ting. Michael did just by moving up to 10th at the end of lap 1. On lap 3 passing 2 cars into turn 11 hairpin. "I followed Eitan and Francis battle for a lap because I didn't want to get in the middle of it," explained Ting. "I knew they were gonna slow each other down and fall into me in time, and by the exit of turn 10 both cars were so slow I took them both under braking into 11." Paul Chan of Champ became Michael's next victim at turn 14 hairpin on lap 5. On lap 6 DTM's David Louie lost his front wing in the back of FRD's Wayne Shen which caused Shen to retire with Louie limping. Michael recalls "David and Wayne came together quite hard, I was right behind and almost got hit in the head by David's flying front wing!" This collision moved Michael up to 5th by lap 7. On lap 8 Michael found a way past DTM's Stephen Chau and ART teammate Zhang Jin into turn 11. "Same case with Eitan and Francis, I can see Stephen was pressuring Zhang Jin for sometime and both fell into me!" This series of jaw dropping passes were well captured on camera and the crowd saw the boy who started 13th move into 3rd in 8 laps. Constantly setting fast laps saw Michael now smoking the exhaust fumes of FRD's Kenneth Ma in 2nd. Michael recalls, "I was very shocked to be in 3rd and it crossed my mind to settle into safe mode and stay here, but when I saw Kenneth only 50 meters away and closing I just HAD to do it!!" Unfortunately the seasoned Ma defended his position by slowing at the apex hard and caused Ting to spin at turn 12. "That kind of move was fair and I do it sometime too, but Kenneth practically stopped his car!! .... I had no choice but to move onto the dirty lane and spun." This incident allowed Zhang Zin to reclaim 3rd and with Michael settling for 4th under the finish line.

"It really sucks to have not turned the Pole into a win then missing the podium today. But inside I know I drove one of the best races this Championship have ever seen and this joy is second only to winning," said Michael. "I might not have gotten what I deserved, but I got what I needed! Plus I've the novelty of knowing I hold the track record for this weekend! Including the V8s!!" laughs Michael.

In less then 2 weeks Michael and ART will be packing their bags again for Sepang Malaysia for round 5 and 6 of the Asian Formula Renault Championship. "I can feel I really grew as a racer this weekend. What I learned here I can take with me to any circuit, and I'm full of confident to put on a good show in front of JGTC at Sepang."

Default this may seem like a dumb question, but are you Michael Ting Chi-Hwa?

If so, great report. Best of luck for the rest of the season.

Default hahahaha bastard, it's easy for you with someone writing press releases!

just kidding...congrats and it'll come together...I'd still recommend RACING karts a little just to get more wheel-to-wheel time but eventually you'll get the experience in the races.

Way to go!

Default I actually always had more confidence in my race craft then raw speed.

At Jim Hall I always race better then I qualify. And this isn't the 1st time I come through the grid after getting screwed. At my 1st Renault race I came from 23rd to 9th.

Default not having been there...

it seemed like you were a LITTLE anxious to move up and may have taken a few too many chances given the guys you were with...but OTOH, you are obviously going to watch for being brake-checked next time heh</sunday morning quarterback>

I've had it preached to me over and over: "Patience is the hardest thing to learn"!

Default Sounds like "David Louie of DTM" is an asshat... stay away from him!

Nice writeup, and sounds like it was a learning weekend. File all of that away and remember it for next time.

Default yeah, took me 45 minutes to set up a pass once...

in an enduro at Sears Point a couple of years ago, battling for the lead and the guy didn't want me to pass and had pretty well nailed how to drive the track while leaving 0 space for a nearly identically fast car.

Eventually worked out a way by on the dirt but despite running nose-to-tail and side-by-side for all that time, we never touched once.

Of course, you have to HAVE 45 minutes heh.

In the enduros, you learn who is an asshat and who is courteous pretty quickly and the worst was some guy with a Honda who had two mini "pretend" mirrors made out of Mylar. He could never see me and every time I lapped him I had to banzi him.

Racing is about controlled aggression and knowing when to control it and when to unleash it just takes experience.
