using video games to learn racetracks?
What's the hot setup for this? Console or pc based? I assume you need to get the wheel and pedals add-on controls, which set is best?

GT2.. actully helpped me a bit..
The concept of doing all the braking and shifting before entering a turn is in GT2
The racing line are also in there which helps some what but each person might not take the same amount of what they learned from the game on to the track. For all we now you might just forget everything once you are there.
But I have to say I know laguna pretty well even thought I've never been there thanks to GT2. But it doensn't mean I'll turn in a fast lap in real life.
If you want something that cuts pretty close to real life driving nothing is closer then GT2 but make sure you are running the simulation tires instead of the other tires they have.

Which tracks do you have in mind?
For the PC, you could use Nascar Racing 4 for the Sears Point & Watkins Glen road courses as well as all the Speedways/Superspeedways and Superbike 2001 (yes a motorcycle game) for Laguna Seca. I use a steering wheel for my car driving games and a joystick for the motorcycle games.
