experiences in modding..
it's amazing that doing this hobby for 5 years, i'm just beginning to learn some things now. today i was at KTR, essentially paying them to reinstall something that was done by another shop (which for the time being will go nameless).
here are my conclusions:
1) choose experience over cost. if a shop quotes you a lesser fee, verify they've done the same exact task before. some mechanics tend to be overworked and burnt-out and they fudge it up when doing something new.
2) be clear about your expectations, and verify the mechanic has a clear understanding. don't assume. i know this can be difficult because some mechanics think you're telling them what to do.
3) if things change in the middle of the work (request for additional labor, difficulties with the installation, etc) make sure you discuss the new path with the mechanic and how it'll affect the the final cost. don't assume. at that moment it may seem like he's being a great guy, until he slaps you with more labor hours you had not anticipated.
add your own from your experiences..

Write the tasks and expectations down...
to ensure you and the mechanic are really on the same page as far as the details go and what the expectations are if things change midstream.
I've found putting these things on a sheet of paper to be beneficial for both of us as memories tend to produce different scenarios when things go astray from the original plan.
