radio error code: Err 1 ... what's that crap mean?

If it is happening in the in-dash headunit, and you are using regular CDs....
not DIY burned CD's, then the headunit might be toast and you have to get it replaced.
IIRC, there is a "core" price with the dealer so you can get a new headunit, complete with new security code etc. for like $250 and your broken headunit (I think that was for Symphony headunit). Otherwise, you are looking for a used one on eBay or AW classifieds.
My offer to help out with some VAG is still available, just to see if any error codes are being thrown. Let me know!
