replace a transmission???
They said the tranny is dead, and want ~$6,000 for a new one installed. So...
1. Can I really trust their diagnosis? Might it just be a failed seal or something?
2. How hard is it to take out the tranny? Should I attempt it myself?
3. Where could I get a replacement? Rebuilt? Used?
4. How much am I looking at here?
5. Does any one want to buy/trade a broken A4?
Thanks
1. You can get a quote for your transmission repair by MZF in Burlingame. They are official ZF rep, and have done work on one of my trans. DO NOT take to any old trans repair shop. ZF trans are special, require special tools. Fortunately MZF are very reasonable.
2. You can easily get a replacement trans from wreckers like Dads Auto or Specialized German. Assuming you have quattro the 5HPFL19FLA is a very common trans used by many models of Audi.
3. Get a shop that works on Audi's and has a clue. Normally workshop manual would recommend dropping the subframe and removing engine, but the trans can be swapped on a C5/B5 V6 with min effort by just lowering sub-frame.
Probably Autostatwerke in Sth San Jose ?
If you didn't insist on a new trans, I would guess cost is $3~$4K
