Default TriBoro-FDR-GWB-Rt4-Rt17 (get cheap NJ gas)-Rt87

or the scenic route

TriBoro-Bruckner-BronxRiverPkwy-Taconic-Rt84-Rt87

Seems like the northbound Hutch,Whitestone, throgs etc. combos are always choked up and you're better of heading straight into the Bronx or Manhattan

Default be prepared for a bumpy ride lol

i usually drive out to long island from north jersey not far from the thruway. i guess it depends where in long island your coming from but from LI i usually take cross island to the Throgs Neck to the cross bronx to the GWB to rt4 to 17N then after a 20 min drive on 17 you can pick up the thurway.

good luck there are probably 3 or 4 different routes you can take, but thats my favorite.

Default Depends on how far up you have to go...

You going to Woodbury or something?

You can take the Jerz route there since you don't have to pay the bridge toll going in and you can fill up for cheap. Then take the NY route back.
