I'll be hanging out with my dog, doing a "meet the breed" for Pit Bulls. Answering questions, showing him off, etc. It's all for the Pit Bull Project, a local non-profit rescue organization.

Nothing fancy, but if you're in the area I'd love to meet some fellow AWers.

Default I had two Pit Bulls attack me last year. They each chose a leg and went to work.

I don't want to see any more of them any time soon.

Default sorry about that

I know this will sound like a "party line", but nine times out of ten it's a result of bad owners more than bad dogs. They definitely need a good home, and even then some of them just can't get past their heritage. It's always suprising when pit bulls attack humans, since that's not what they were bred to do. They were (in the past) bred to fight other dogs and be handled by humans, so any dog that showed human agression was put down. It's probably little comfort that the worst my two would do is lick you until you drowned.

If you ever want to see the softer side of the breed, just let me know. I understand how hard it can be to get past a dog attack, since my girlfriend is also a victim (by a different breed).

Default I used to have two on my paper route when I was a kid

they were terrible, terrible dogs to have on your paper route. The only reason I never got bit by them is a) I didn't have to deliver to their house, and b) their house was on a wide turn, so I could get enough speed and zip by. Didn't stop them from chasing me every day, though.

More than one occassion, I saw them playing tug-of-war with a possum or raccoon (once, a cat) that they had caught either in the woods or their yard. They were a scary pair. Seemed like teamwork was their thing, as one would come from behind me, and the other jump out from somewhere further up my route.

That being said, for the most part, I agree with you on the owner's part in all of this. During my two years as a paper boy, I was bitten twice- by two different dogs that would both qualify as foot rests. I still don't like Poodles a whole lot to this day.

FWIW, all of my friends know me as a huge fan of all things animal and especially dogs.

Default I have to agree it's all about the owners

Sure, you can get some bad apples now and then (look at me!) but it's all about owners. When you see mean, aggressive pit bulls you'll always find a poor owner behind them. Some people like the social stigma of having a ferocious dog (read also "compensating"). Those are the ones of which to steer clear. What's going on at the bakery - just the dog deal? Where is it anyway?

Default Large part owners, small part breeding

Rottweilers are vicious too, right? I have two friends with rottweilers, one was washed out of a police dog program for being too nice, the other (Zoe) has parents who are both therapy dogs. I have a picture of our 4 y/o riding Zoe. If something is wrong, she comes over to try and comfort you (150lb lap dog...).

Unfortunately with both breeds can be bred for aggressive traits as well as being poorly treated/trained.
