Default "Some assembly required"

FINALLY got my stuff back from the machine shop.

<a href="http://johnbaas.dyndns.org/2point0/audi_parts_1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://johnbaas.dyndns.org/2point0/audi_parts_1_lo.jpg"></a>

<a href="http://johnbaas.dyndns.org/2point0/audi_parts_2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://johnbaas.dyndns.org/2point0/audi_parts_2_lo.jpg"></a>

If anybody is curious, the writing on the pistons is the weight before balancing, the rods weighed between 470g and 474.8g on the big ends, the small ends varied from 201.5g to 204.6g, for a rod weight total of 671.5g (after balancing)

The total rotating assembly weighs 1123.5g (not including crank. I'll have to see if I can come up with a scale to compare it to the old 1.8 rods and pistons.

Default So, you're sticking with two oil returns?

I hope they bored those two out for you. I think I saw something on Vortex about a guy who had three tubes plumbed back down to the pan so the 20V head would fit on without having to plug those returns.

Default There's actually four returns....

There are two on the intake side as well.
I'd have to notch the block to get any sort of oil return coming off the head, and I'm not willing to do that unless I have to.

I'll be plumbing in an oil-pressure gauge and watching it carefully.

Default I wonder if the VW AEG block is a simpler choice than the ABA?

I've been enjoying your buildfest.

Default The only reason I went with the ABA block is because it's a tall-deck block....

The AEG block is not. The AEB block will work, but you can't use the 159mm rods, you have to use the stock 144mm rods.

The only thing this will affect is the Rod/Stroke ratio:
The 1.8 has a 1.67 R/S ratio.
The low deck 2.0 has a 1.55 R/S ratio.
The tall deck 2.0 has a 1.71 R/S ratio.

If I knew it was going to be this big of a PITA to use an ABA block, would I have done it? Maybe.
Would a sane person have done it? Definately not

Default With you...

but the AEG is 2.0L through a bigger diameter piston at a little higher compression than the 1.8T (easily fixable with the pistons or gasket, I don't know the 1.8 head cc). I thought you just wanted the 2.0L displacement?

Default All you'd have to do is bore out the 1.8 block by 1.5mm

and it would be the same as a 2.0, plus you know the head will fit the block, so there's no advantage with going with the AEG block.

Plus, the pistons are notched for the middle intake valve, and I doubt the AEG block has the notch, so you'd have to buy pistons anyways, and that way you can get any compression ratio you want.

The 20v head is 42cc, but I've been told the newer heads have a slightly bigger chamber.

I mainly wanted a 2.0, but if you're going to build a motor, and there's a way to put a longer rod in, then you usually go for it.
