Adding a center muffler to a Phaeton V8.

Adding a center muffler to a Phaeton V8.
The 2004 VW Phaeton with the V8 is a noisy beast on acceleration. Spoils the radio, The VW Phaeton with the W12 engine is a lot quieter - because it has a center muffer where the V8 just has an "X" pipe.
So, I want to put the W12 muffler on the V8. (See part #13 in the two diagrams. W12 has the muffler - V8 doesn't.)
Anybody here know anything about exhaust systems on VWs? I'd like your input. Am I gonna throw codes, melt pistons, kill the cats?

No problems, just get the parts and do it. It even looks like VW used the same size piping . . .
as the diagrams look identical--just confirm the diameter of the pipes. As the X-pipe you want to replace with a mid resonator sits after the cats, you will have absolutely no problems.
VW/AUDI is known for using the same exhaust piping on larger engines as it does on smaller engines to save long-term costs associated with warehousing and reproduction, as opposed to the Asian model which focuses on near-term costs of upfront purchasing and manufacturing.
On the V6 12v, it also has a very nicely flowing exhaust system that one may use on much higher hp engines.
However, I cannot imagine that the V8 makes as much noise as the V6 12v. I suspect that the elongated cross-section of the head exhaust ports amplifies the sound much more than the circular shape found on almost every other engine. You cannot drive a 12v without a mid resonator; the volume will just drive you crazy after a while. I would feel interested to know, If you can get a good picture of the exhaust ports on your V8, what shape do they have: "circular" or "rectangular with rounded corners"?
