APR Snub mount warning.....
I have had an APR snub mount in my car for a while now (10 months or so) and I noticed that the original shift firmness was degrading, and that I was starting to get a lot of slop.
My theory was that since the snub mount is a lot firmer than stock, that it would put more stress on the left and right engine mounts. So I bought some new engine mounts ($60 for the pair, couldn't go wrong)
I replaced the mounts, and found the old mounts were slightly shorter, 3mm on pass side, 6mm on driver side. This is because they have compressed over time and use (abuse)
Since the new ones were slightly taller, I had to adjust the snub mount plate. Surprise, surprise, the back plate (part that bolts to the engine) was loose. I tightened it down, and adjusted the engine plate. I'm guessing the added vibes from the firmer snub mount caused the plate to loosen.
I now have shifting goodness back I haven't hit the highway yet, but I'm hoping that the slight buzz I was getting is gone now.
If you have a high mileage A4 (mine has 80K miles on it) you might want to consider replacing the left and right engine mounts, especially if you do a lot of track events and autocrosses.
If you have an APR snub mount, you may want to check to make sure everything is tight every now and then.
I got my engine mounts from Carmadillo, they are OEM mounts. They also have a bunch of other OEM parts (I bought new clutch master and slave cylinders as well)
The stock mounts are 101mm uncompressed, if you want to measure them (but it requires mount removal, and the pass side mount is a PITA)

Thanks for the heads up!
I have an APR snub mount waiting to go in. I'm gonna chip, put in snub mount, and a short shifter (leaning towards Neuspeed) soon.
First I gotta bring car to dealer, I think I have something wrong with wheel bearing or something...
Take care,

A couple of questions...
Okay, checked out the Carmadillo site (cool site but it keeps shutting down my browser for some reason), and am having a little trouble figuring out which parts you are talking about.
I first put in that I had a '96 A4 and it only came up with one engine mount listing. I then put in a '97 1.8T and it did come up with separate engine mounts for the right and the left. However, when I clicked on the Right one, it tells me that it's not available. When I click on the left one, it says it is available, but costs $41.35.
So, my questions are:
1. Do you know if the 12V and the 1.8T use the same engine mounts? I would assume they do since APR only has one snub mount. I'm sure I can figure this one out on my own, but figured I'd ask just in case you knew.
2. Are the right mount and left mount the same?
3. How did your total only come out to $60 when just one of the mounts is $41?
4. What was the process you used to locate the proper mounts on the site? I have only been able to use the search function, and am assumming that's why I'm not getting a complete listing of mounts (if I try to select a category, my browser crashed...IE6 on WinXP).
Thanks,
Scott

You could buy cyl. bar stock and have it turned to dimension or
buy urethane casting resin (Dow makes a very good series) and build a mold to cast one. But, I think you'll find the APR is far cheaper than going the other routes.

Another question...
Are all the parts that this place sells OEM parts? Some of their prices are pretty amazing compared to other places that I've seen.
Have you ordered anything else besides the engine mounts from these guys?
Thanks,
Scott

Here..This might help.
The 1.8l and the 2.8l R&L mounts are similar but not the same. The 2.8ls (12v) brackets mount to the stabalizer bar, the 1.8ls dont. Heres a diagram of what things look like.
The 12v

The 20v

If you would like the part numbers let me know, you could call the dealer to get a price on the OEM.
