My point is that 91 octane at 5300+ feet is not inferior fuel to the 92
or 93 octane 'pump fuel' we West and East 'coasters' get.
Typically there isn't more power in a gallon of 93 than in a gallon of 87 within a brand. Often times the higher octane will be achieved by adding modifiers that reduce the percentage of volitiles in the fuel ... reducing the power available per gallon.
Dialing in more boost and/or timing until knock becomes an issue might leave one with the need to up the octane but then again adding boost is a problem at altitude as over spinning the turbo gets to be a problem ... as you said (sorta) fuel isn't really the issue at altitude . . lack of air is.
