Helicoils ok for cast turbo manifold?
Hey guys, it's been a long time since i posted... but need some info...
I have an ATP T3 cast turbo manifold on a B5 1.8T. One of the threads have stripped out on the turbo side (that holds the stud). Is this repairable?
My thoughts:
1) Repair will Helicoil or similar... but can this stand up to the heat and pressures of a turbo manifold?
2) Drill out and re tap for bigger stud.. but not 100% this is possible at the moment, as space is REALLY tight
3) replace manifold? I tried contacting ATP Turbo but they dont respond to me emails asking for help and advice.
What do you think?
Thanks.

Helicoil might be the answer. I have had good luck with a helicoil in an aluminum boat motor spark plug hole and the compression and heat in there is a lot more than the turbo would be (100-110psi for boat engine, 9-15psi for a turbo I think). I would go to a local automotive aftermarket parts place and ask there as well. They'll also be able to recommend a coil diameter (they'll have a chart in a binder somewhere). Make sure to clean out any little filings from inside the manifold once you're done tapping and installing. Good luck!
