Default Maf sensor problem.need advice

I have replaced the maff sensor once, when I removed it, the wire was gone, and now again the wire is gone(don't want to spend $200 for new maf), I put it back and left it unpluged, the car runs fine the failure is gone but the check cell is on, what could happend if you have an upluged maf for a long time?

Default If your taking about a wire that is actually on the maf sensor part

then you have the wrong part for your 2000, the 2000 only has the flat metal sensor at the bottom and does not come with the small wire resistor at the top of the sensor.
