This is a X-post from the A4 board but I need some advice on what the problem could be. I took my car last week for a 40,000 mile check up. Nothing really wrong, they replaced the water pump. I got the car back and it had a louder whistling noise. I took it to the dealer 2 days later and drove the mechanic around and he said that the noise is not right, probably the turbo. A few days later(today) I noticed the whistling noise is the same but now its making a louder rattling noise. The car always made a rattling noise but now its very noticable. The rattling noise only happens when the turbo is under load. If I rev gently to high rpms there is no noise but if i punch it, the noise is pretty loud for a few seconds then is quieter. Even engaging the cluch makes this rattling noise. It seems like when the turbo first starts to spool up it makes the noise. The performance is fine but what could be causing this noise and what could have the dealer done to my car? I guess it could be a coincident that the turbo started to make the noise just after I got my car back from the dealer. Any advice would be great.

ALSO, does anybody know any good mechanics in the LA area?

Sounds silly, but did you check all the heat shields for rattles?
