Default Oil leakage :-( Ideas on where it's coming from?

I've always had a very very slow leak, as there's always been a light coating of gunk on the underside of the tranny/oil pan. However, it was not leaking enough to show up in the dipstick nor did it ever drip down onto the belly pan.....

...until yesterday. Things aren't looking so good...

And the view from underneath..(pass. side of oil pan area)

And that ain't cosmoline folks...

Sorry, the pics kinda suck, but I didn't have much room to move around under there....much less take a GOOD picture.

So where's it coming from? Hell if I know. From above, about all I can see is the top of the tranny....and it's clean. I can't really see the headgasket area on either side. The driver's side of the oilpan is dry compared to the other side, so I'm thinking it's coming from somewhere on the other side. And it's ALL over the underside of the tranny, as you can (sort of) see in the pic. That's about all I can say really....I wish I had a lift and some really good lighting.

AFAIK, the 1.8T doesn't typically develop many oil leaks, aside from maybe the valve cover....right? I do have a bit of seepage there as well, but there's no way it's the main culprit here.

And finally....a little history of this motor. The head was replaced at 52K when the tensioner broke, and the turbo was later replaced due to them botching something when they did the head (I wasn't the owner of the car at this time). That's all I know as far as major engine work goes.

This blows. Any thoughts? Thanks..

Andy

I had the my oil pump replaced under warranty, and the Audi dealership which did the work didn't torque the oil pan down properly. I had seepage from the drivers side of the oil pan, so I added my "torque to feel" on all of the oil pan bolts. The seepage went away.

I had the same look on my bellypan, FWIW.

I would agree, check the sump bolts first, then work your way up. I'd be more suspect of the VCG if its not the sump. HG's rarely seep much if at all, based on my experience with the 5cyl cars.

Default Where is the most forward sign of oil?

Because everything back from there is just blow back while driving. The bottom of my tranny looks like that because I have a small leak at the oil return line from the turbo and it just runs along the pan and tranny when the air goes under the car while driving.

clean it up with brake cleaner. and ask the dealer for some uv dye. best way to find the leaks, IMHO
