Default Question....

If a timing belt was put on and the match of gears was 1-2-or 3 teeth off..what would the symptoms be? Its not enough for interference from the valves..but... we are having serious start up issues when cold 1.8T..fits daily start. Backfires, smoke.. rough..then nothing..wait...try again..still the same..eventually it catchs..runs rough then the rest of the day is fine..albeit a pop backfire..now and then between shifts.

VAG Codes are only multiple missfires

the 1.8T engine can run if it's 1 tooth off retarded. It'll run like poop when it's cold, and can adapt to it actually. We had a guy come in for his second timing belt replacement (after 50,000 miles) and it was a tooth out. IMO, your best bet would be to take it in to someone experienced with them, and have them check the timing marks.

Other thing you could check is monitor value block 90 & 91. It'll show you the intake cam advance. At idle it should be relatively zero, and around 2200 it should advance to around 20.

Default Well.. then its a retard...we are after.

The shop is looking at their work and scratching their collective heads. They are looking at the cam/timing possibility, but also think that that it may be oil pressure. Something about startup with the cold (its 65 today) oil not going back down and causing a build up between the cams and the valves. Causing the valves to hang a 'ch' open causing a lack of pressure.

At least they are working on it.
Damn..these guys can build incredible rally cars...do K)4 upgrades till the cows come home...why not solve this?
